Reducing Exposure to Biological Contaminants

Take steps to minimize biological pollutants in basements.

Clean and disinfect the basement floor drain regularly. Do not finish a basement below ground level unless all water leaks are patched and outdoor ventilation and adequate heat to prevent condensation are provided. Operate a dehumidifier in the basement if need to keep relative humidity levels (yes, you guessed it) between 30-50 percent.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Lung Association can both provide you with more information on biological pollutants in your home.

Stoves, Heaters, Fireplaces, and Chimneys

In addition to environmental tobacco smoke, other sources of combustion products are unvented kerosene and gas space heaters, woodstoves, fireplaces, and gas stoves. The major pollutants released are carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particles. Unvented kerosene heaters may also generate acid aerosols.

Combustion gases and particles also come from chimneys and flues that are improperly installed or maintained and cracked furnace heat exchangers. Pollutants fro fireplaces and woodstoves with no dedicated outdoor air supply can be “back-drafted” from the chimney into the living space, particularly in weatherized homes.

Noise having huge impact on health

Two in every hundred deaths from heart disease may be caused by stress related to noise, says a study that suggests thousands of people in Britain may be dying from a lack of peace and quiet.

Research from the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown the striking contribution of noise to premature deaths from disease.

Noise is linked to heart attack and stroke because it creates chronic stress that keeps our bodies in a state of constant alert. Even when somebody is asleep, their ears, brain and body continue to react to sounds, raising levels of stress hormones.

If these stress hormones are in constant circulation, they can cause long-term physiological changes that could be life-threatening.

The new WHO figures suggest that two per cent of Europeans suffer severely disturbed sleep because of noise pollution.

The WHO has yet to finalise what levels of exposure cause problems, though the threshold for cardiovascular troubles, for example, is above 50 decibels at night or above 60 during the day - equivalent to the noise of a dishwasher.

The WHO's investigations have been triggered in part by a rapid increase in complaints about noise pollution.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics state that noise complaints to local government offices in Britain have increased fivefold over the past 20 years.

Bleach and Cancer

The latest TRI data reflects only a fraction of the dioxin that is being released into the environment every day, according to the Stop Dioxin Exposure Campaign. TRI data does not include a number of dioxin sources, including the largest, waste incinerated by cities, hospitals and rural communities.

Dioxin pollution is persistent and bioaccumulative – which essentially means that is eventually ends up in our food and bodies. According the The American People’s Dioxin Report, about 90 to 98 percent of the general population’s exposure to dioxins is through contaminated food – primarily by eating the animal fat in meat, fish, poultry and dairy products.

Chlorine alternatives

· Chlorine-free toilet paper and paper towels are available at many natural food stores. Additionally, newspaper can be used in place of paper towels for cleaning windows, and rags can be used for other surfaces.

Alternative cleaning products

· Many household cleaners contain chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach, or sodium hypochlrite, is a lung and eye irritant.

· If mixed with ammonia or acid-based cleaners (including vinegar), chlorine bleach releases toxic chloramines gas. Short – term exposure to this gas may cause mild asthmatic symptoms or more serious respiratory problems. (Source: Washington Toxics Coalition)

To be on the safe side, don’t mix chlorine bleach with anything. Just avoid chlorine bleach altogether. The EPA recommends using a non-chlorine bleach such as hydrogen peroxide to bleach clothes. Yes, it does work to get your clothes clean and white.

Do Your Best With Breakfast

You've probably heard it said a million times before that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So is this true? And if so, why do so many folks go without it?

Let's tackle a few beliefs about breakfast.

I don't eat breakfast because I'm on a diet and want to cut calories

While this might sound logical, it just doesn't work that way. A recent study of 3000 dieters by the University of Colorado's Center for Human Nutrition found that of those that lost weight, 78 per cent ate breakfast every day, another 10 per cent ate it at least five times a week and only four per cent never ate breakfast.

The fact is breakfast helps with weight loss - and avoiding weight gain. If you have a healthy meal to start your day, you are less likely to get the type of hunger pangs later on that may tempt you to stop by the vending machine for chocolate or chips. And by providing your body with an early energy source, you should feel less lethargic and better equipped to fit some exercise into your day.

I don't eat breakfast because I don't have time

What's it take? 15 minutes? It's well worth getting up a little earlier. If you want to perform better, or get more out of your day, you should eat breakfast. The evidence linking adequate nutrition to effective mental cognitive performance is plentiful.

So what are the benefits of daily breakfast?

For starters, breakfast is good for maintaining effective immunity. In other words, skip your brekkie and you're more likely to catch a cold as you catch the train to work, or anywhere else where sneezes are recycled.

It has been found that those who consumed breakfast cereal every day reported better mental and physical health than those who skipped breakfast altogether. "Regular eaters of breakfast, especially breakfast cereal, get fewer and less severe colds than non-consumers", a professor said.

Also, if you eat it at home, it is a meal you have control over. You make it yourself so you can decide what goes in it. This improves your chances of making a healthy choice.

“The world as a whole is becoming much more aware of the need for wellness, rather than just the need to manage illness,” says Mannatech’s vice president of international finance. “And with science increasingly validating the essential role of the glyconutrients in our patented and patent-pending products, Mannatech is uniquely positioned to provide the missing ingredient in the wellness puzzle.”

The Whole-Grain Story

Foods derived form grains such as wheat, rice and oats are an important part of a balanced diet as they provide a range of nutrient essential to good health. The best choices are the whole grains – brown rice, oatmeal and burghul (cracked wheat) because these foods contain the bran and the germ in the kernel while in refined grains these have been removed. As a result, whole grains are an excellent source of fibre and are rich in vitamins and minerals. And another good reason to make the switch to whole grains is because they move carcinogens through the intestines faster, lowering cancer and heart disease rates and keeping blood sugar and insulin levels steady.

Mannatech was founded to provide a vehicle for those who desire a purpose driven opportunity that addresses the two biggest concerns families everywhere face: their health and their finances. One leading economist has predicted that the wellness industry will become the next trillion-dollar industry due to an enormous shift taking place in the healthcare industry. Sleep yourself thin

Middle-aged women may be able to sleep their way to a trimmer body. In a study that followed more than 68,000 women for 16 years, researchers found that those who caught more sleep each night tended to put on less weight during middle-age. Women who typically clocked five hours of sleep were one third more likely than those who slept for seven hours to have a substantial weight gain (15kg or more) during the study period.
Even a relatively small weight gain can make a health difference; putting on an extra 4.5kg has been shown to double a person's risk of diabetes. Sleep-deprived women were more likely to gain in excess of 13.6kg, and were 15 percent more likely to become obese as they grew older. Although the reasons aren't clear, some research suggests that sleep deprivation alters hormones involved in appetite control and metabolism.
