Rooted in Science

Mannatech’s history is a testament to its focus on the scientific aspect of the products it develops. In the early 1990s, Sam Caster joined forces with a biochemist who would eventually become his business partner, and the pair began to explore opportunities within the nutrition industry, However, because there were no legal guidelines in place to regulate this type of high-quality nutritional supplement, Caster and his partner decided to go into the pharmaceuticals business and began making biotech products for the agriculture industry.

Their vision took a different direction in 1994, when federal legislation was passed that established new safety guidelines, required ingredient and nutrition labeling, and tightened manufacturing regulations.

“For the first time, this provided a legal venue for showing science-based results for dietary supplements,” Caster explained. “The legislation gives the consumer great information about the science of dietary supplements – what they do, what their benefits are – and it requires manufacturers to use good practices in providing goods to consumers.”

The founding pair put together a scientific team to look into and patent combinations of nutritional components necessary for optimal health such as glyconutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phytohormones. The team went on to discover, identify, and patent Mannatech’s flagship Ambrotose product.

A combination of carbohydrates that have dynamic impacts on the quality of life, Ambrotose and its effects on a variety of chronic conditions have been the subject of 15 papers published by Mannatech researchers, Caster noted. Ambrotose products account for 40% of Mannatech’s sales.
